NEN 1010 §414
SELV
SELV (Safety Extra Low Voltage)
Also known as: selv, badkamer, badkamers, waterzone
SELV (Safety Extra Low Voltage): Safe extra-low voltage ≤50 V AC / 120 V DC, supplied via a safety transformer with double insulation. No earthing of active parts or enclosures permitted. Used in wet and damp zones such as zone 0 in bathrooms.
Practical example
Lighting in zone 0 of a bathroom is powered via a 12 V SELV transformer with no earth connection on the secondary circuit.
Common mistake
SELV (Safety Extra Low Voltage) Common mistake: Connecting a SELV circuit to PE 'just in case' — contradicts SELV definition and breaks double insulation.
