Isolation transformer (electrical separation)
A transformer with galvanically separated primary and secondary windings, whose secondary side is not earthed. Used as the 'electrical separation' protective measure under NEN 1010 §413; provided the secondary supplies only one item of equipment, a first fault does not require automatic disconnection because no closed circuit to earth can form.
In een operatiekamer wordt de medische apparatuur gevoed via een scheidingstransformator, zodat één geïsoleerde fout niet direct tot uitschakeling van de stroomvoorziening leidt tijdens een operatie.
De secundaire zijde van een scheidingstransformator alsnog aan de hoofdaardrail aansluiten 'voor de zekerheid' — daarmee vervalt het principe van veiligheidsscheiding en ontstaat er weer een gesloten foutstroomkring.
