Resettable overcurrent protection with thermal (overload) and magnetic (short-circuit) trip. B, C, and D characteristics determine magnetic trip speed.
Practical example
Circuit-breaker (MCB). A 16 A B-type breaker on the lighting circuit allows the normal inrush current of LED drivers but trips instantly on a short circuit in the fitting.
Common mistake
Circuit breaker (MCB) - Common mistake: Installing a breaker with a rated current too high for the cable (e.g., 20 A breaker on 1.5 mm² wiring) — the cable is no longer protected against overload.
