IP Protection Rating Code (IEC 60529)
International classification system under IEC 60529 that indicates the degree of protection an enclosure of electrical equipment provides against the ingress of solid objects and dust (first digit, 0-6) and of water (second digit, 0-9K), consisting of the letters IP followed by two digits, for example IP44 or IP65. The first digit ranges from IP0X (no protection) through IP2X (finger-safe, no objects >12.5 mm) to IP6X (fully dust-tight); the second digit ranges from IPX0 (no protection) through IPX4 (splashing water from all directions) to IPX8 (continuous submersion under pressure). A digit that is not specified is replaced by an X, for example IPX4 when only water protection is relevant. The required IP value of equipment depends on the external-influence code (AD class for water, AE class for foreign objects) of the installation space as determined by NEN 1010 §512.2, and is assessed separately from the mechanical impact resistance expressed by the IK code.
Voor een buitenverlichtingsarmatuur boven een terras kiest de installateur een armatuur met minimaal IP44, terwijl voor een tuinspot die permanent in een waterpartij ligt IP68 vereist is.
Denken dat een hoge IP-waarde ook mechanische stootvastheid garandeert — IP-codering zegt niets over bestandheid tegen stoten; daarvoor is de aparte IK-code (IEC 62262) van toepassing.
