Protection Class I / II / III
Classification of electrical equipment according to how protection against electric shock in case of an insulation fault is achieved. Class I has basic insulation plus a protective conductor (PE) that earths the enclosure; Class II has double or reinforced insulation and needs no PE (identified by the double-square symbol); Class III operates exclusively at SELV/PELV voltage, so a hazardous touch voltage cannot occur in the event of a fault.
Een handboormachine met kunststof behuizing zonder aardaansluiting en het dubbele-vierkant-symbool op het typeplaatje is Klasse II — mag daarom niet worden 'nageaard' via een geïmproviseerde draad naar de behuizing.
Bij een Klasse II-apparaat toch een PE-aansluiting proberen te maken 'voor de zekerheid' — de behuizing is niet ontworpen om aarde te dragen en dit kan de dubbele isolatie juist ondermijnen of een schijnveiligheid creëren.
