NEN-EN-IEC 60204-1 — electrical safety of machinery
A sorting machine, potting machine, or conveyor line in a processing hall has its own electrical installation — cabling, motors, sensors, a control cabinet — that does not fall under NEN 1010 the way the fixed building installation does. That is the domain of a separate standard: NEN-EN-IEC 60204-1, "Safety of machinery — Electrical equipment of machines".
The dividing line: the machine's main switch
NEN 1010 governs the fixed, building-related electrical installation up to and including the point where the supply is connected to the machine's main switch. Everything after that point — the cabling, motors, sensors, and control cabinet that are part of the machine itself — falls under NEN-EN-IEC 60204-1. This standard specifically addresses the electrical safety of machinery, not building installations.
Difference with NEN 3140: one-off verification versus periodic management
- NEN-EN-IEC 60204-1 verification takes place at the commissioning of a new or modified machine — comparable in nature to a NEN 1010 commissioning test, but focused on the machine itself.
- NEN 3140 governs the safe use and management of the existing low-voltage installation in a business environment, including the machine throughout its further service life, and requires periodic re-inspection — not a one-off test.
A machine that was correctly delivered as 60204-1-compliant at commissioning can therefore still fall within NEN 3140 periodic inspection once it is in operation — the two standards do not replace each other, but follow one another over time.
Why this is relevant in the horticulture/processing sector
Sorting machines, potting machines, and conveyor belts are often supplied by a machine builder or importer with a CE mark, which is assumed to rest on correct 60204-1 compliance of the machine itself. That CE mark, however, says nothing about the quality of the building-side connection (cabling, distribution board, residual current protection before the machine's main switch) — that remains squarely NEN 1010/NEN 3140 territory of the owner/user.
Common mistakes
- Assuming that a NEN 3140 inspector also automatically checks the internal cabling/control system of a machine for 60204-1 compliance — this requires a different scope, different measuring points, and often different expertise than a regular NEN 3140 installation inspection.
- Equating a machine's CE mark with a correct NEN 1010 connection — CE covers the machine itself, not the building-side supply feeding it.
- Not having a 60204-1 verification performed for self-built or substantially modified machines — once a user substantially intervenes in a machine's control system/cabling themselves, they become (co-)responsible in practice for 60204-1 compliance.
