Cable Reel — Thermal Cut-out Protection
A retractable extension cable (reel) that is not fully unwound during use heats up significantly in the wound coils because heat from the current-carrying conductor cannot dissipate properly; many professional reels are therefore fitted with a thermal cut-out (bimetallic switch) that interrupts the supply once a critical temperature is exceeded. During a NEN 3140 inspection of work equipment, it is checked whether this thermal protection is present and functional, and users must be instructed to always fully unwind the reel for prolonged or heavy use.
