External influences (§512.2) — the AA/AD/AE/BA/BC classification codes
The IP rating guide covers how an enclosure is rated against ingress of water and solid objects. The roles-and-appointment guide covers who counts as VOP or VP. §512.2 (based on IEC 60364-5-51) connects both subjects through a single underlying system: a standardised letter code that describes every external influence on an installation — temperature, water, dust, the combustibility of building materials, and even the competence of the people who will access the space — before any choice is made about cable type, protection rating, or protective measure.
The letter system: category, nature, class
Each code consists of two letters followed by a digit:
- First letter — category: A = environment, B = utilisation (of the installation/location), C = construction of the building.
- Second letter — nature of the influence: for example temperature, water, capability of persons.
- Digit — class, increasing in severity within that nature of influence.

BA4/BA5: the direct link to VOP/VP
The BA series (capability of persons) is the code closest to NEN 3140 exam material:

This is not a coincidence: the BA classification of IEC 60364-5-51 is the international basis on which the Dutch VP/VOP structure (Arbobesluit article 3.5, see the roles guide) is effectively built — a space classified as "accessible to BA5 only" may in practice only be entered by an appointed VP for electrotechnical work.
Why this is more than a checkbox exercise
A classification code is never an end in itself — it is the input for a series of downstream choices elsewhere in the standard:
- AD (water) partly determines the minimum IP code an enclosure must have (see the IP rating guide) — a bathroom classified as "risk of water jets" requires a different minimum IP value than a dry office space.
- AA (temperature) affects the correction factors for a cable's current-carrying capacity (see the cable cross-section guide) — a higher AA class requires a larger cable cross-section for the same load.
- CA (construction material) feeds into the assessment of fire-risk business premises (see the BE2 guide).
- BA (capability of persons) partly determines what enclosure or interlocking is required for a switching device — a space accessible to BA1 (laypersons) requires fundamentally different protection than one accessible only to BA5 (VP).
Note: classification codes are often treated as if they only concern the building or climate — but the BA/BC series makes explicit that who enters the space is just as much an external influence as humidity or temperature, with its own design consequences.
Practical relevance
When assessing a space before choosing a cable type, IP value, or enclosure, the full set of relevant classification codes must first be established — not just the obvious ones (such as AD for a wet room), but also the less obvious ones (such as BA for who is allowed to enter). An installation designed solely on the basis of "it's a wet room" can still fall short if the BA or CA classification is skipped.
Common mistakes
- Assessing only the AD code (water) and overlooking the other categories (temperature, dust, capability of persons, construction material).
- Confusing BA4 and BA5 — an instructed person (VOP, BA4) may not independently make judgements reserved for a skilled person (VP, BA5).
- Assuming a classification code is a fixed, permanent property of a space — a change in use (for example an office converted into storage for combustible material) changes the classification and, with it, the requirements on the installation.
- Failing to translate the classification code into a concrete IP or cable choice — the code itself is not a requirement, but the basis on which the actual requirement (IP value, cable type, enclosure) is determined.
