A threaded fitting that brings a cable into an enclosure or luminaire, takes the pull and torsion strain and maintains the IP rating at the entry point. Its size (M, PG) must match the cable diameter; unused holes are sealed with a blind gland or plug to keep the IP.
Practical example
Cable gland. When inserting a 12 mm cable into an outdoor enclosure, an M20 gland with the correct rubber insert is selected to maintain the enclosure's IP65 rating.
Common mistake
Cable gland Common mistake: Choosing an overly loose gland or sealing the opening with tape — the IP rating of the entire enclosure fails at the weakest entry point.
