Thermal overload relay (motor protection)
A protective component, typically mounted directly on a motor contactor, that monitors current in all phases via bimetallic strips and disconnects the motor before prolonged overload (e.g. a jammed shaft or excessive load) thermally damages the winding insulation. It is set to the motor's rated current (In) and often includes phase-loss protection, reacting quickly when one phase drops out and the motor would otherwise continue running single-phased and overheating.
De installateur stelt het overbelastingsrelais van een 5,5 kW-motor in op 11,2 A (het typeplaatje-vollastvermogen) zodat het relais bij een geblokkeerde ventilator binnen enkele seconden tot minuten uitschakelt.
Het overbelastingsrelais te hoog instellen 'om nodeloos uitschakelen te voorkomen' — dit ontneemt de motor juist zijn thermische beveiliging en kan tot wikkelingsdoorbrand en brandgevaar leiden.
