Overvoltage category I-IV (CAT I-IV)
Classification per IEC 60664-1, adopted in NEN 1010 §443, of equipment/installation points according to their exposure to switching and atmospheric overvoltages, expressed as the required impulse withstand voltage (Uimp). CAT I (e.g. electronics behind an isolating transformer): 1.5 kV. CAT II (household appliances, socket-outlets): 2.5 kV. CAT III (fixed wiring, distribution boards): 4 kV. CAT IV (point of supply, main connection/meter): 6 kV at 230/400 V. The closer to the network's point of connection, the higher the required category.
Bij het kiezen van een SPD voor de hoofdverdeler wordt rekening gehouden met CAT IV, terwijl een SPD vlak vóór gevoelige elektronica op CAT I/II wordt afgestemd.
De overspanningscategorie van een meetinstrument (CAT-classificatie meting) verwarren met de overspanningscategorie van een installatiepunt — beide gebruiken dezelfde CAT-schaal, maar de eerste betreft de veiligheid van het meetinstrument zelf, de tweede de vereiste isolatiesterkte van vaste apparatuur/installatie.
