Emergency stop (E-stop)
Noodstop (nood-uit)
A manually operated safety command (mushroom button, pull-cord) that brings a machine to a safe state as fast as possible. EN 60204-1 distinguishes stop category 0 (immediate removal of power) and category 1 (controlled stop, then power off). It overrides all other functions and does not replace the main switch.
Practical example
Emergency stop (E-stop). On a conveyor with stop category 0, the drive stops immediately when the mushroom button is pressed, without controlled deceleration.
Common mistake
Emergency stop (E-stop). Mistake: using as normal on/off or Cat 0 on a shaft needing controlled deceleration; Cat 1 is safer.
