Measurement category (CAT I–IV)
Classification per IEC 61010-1 indicating which transient overvoltages a measuring instrument (and its test leads) is protected against. CAT II applies to socket-outlets and household equipment, CAT III to fixed installations such as distribution boards and consumer units, and CAT IV to the point before the main fuse/meter, including the grid connection. A higher CAT class at the same voltage means higher withstand against transients.
Voor het meten aan de hoofdaansluiting vóór de meter wordt een multimeter met CAT IV 600 V-classificatie gebruikt, niet een goedkope CAT II-tester die daar onvoldoende bescherming biedt.
Een CAT II-meter gebruiken om te meten in een groepenkast of hoofdverdeler — bij een transiënt (bijvoorbeeld door blikseminslag elders op het net) biedt het instrument dan onvoldoende bescherming voor de gebruiker.
