ATEX temperature class (T1–T6)
Classification of electrical equipment for gas-explosive atmospheres according to the maximum surface temperature the device may reach under fault conditions, ranging from T1 (≤ 450 °C) to T6 (≤ 85 °C). The temperature class of the selected equipment must be lower than the auto-ignition temperature of the gas or vapour present, to prevent ignition.
In een zone met waterstofgas (zelfontbrandingstemperatuur circa 560 °C) volstaat materieel met temperatuurklasse T1, terwijl voor ethergas (zelfontbrandingstemperatuur circa 175 °C) minimaal klasse T4 nodig is.
Alleen naar de Ex-markering (bv. Ex d) kijken en de temperatuurklasse negeren — materieel met correcte constructiewijze maar een te hoge T-klasse kan de aanwezige damp alsnog laten ontsteken.
