Underground cables — burial depth and mechanical protection (§522.8)
Cables laid directly (without a protective conduit) in the ground — for example a supply cable between a company hall and an outbuilding, or to a free-standing cultivation space — must be protected against mechanical damage from excavation work, ground subsidence, or frost. §522.8 of NEN 1010 sets out the basic rule for this.
The rule: protection or depth
The generic (European) provision 522.8.10 frames it as a choice: underground cables, conduits, or sheathed pipes must either be mechanically protected against damage (for example by a protective conduit or plate), or laid at a depth such that the risk of damage is minimal.
The Dutch national implementation (522.8.10.1) makes this concrete: a cable outside a building must be laid at a trench depth of at least 0.5 m.
Note: this 0.5 m is the Dutch base rule for cables outside buildings in regular ground; for special situations (under a trafficked roadway, in a border/verge without traffic load, or under a specifically protected crossing) a different depth may apply — when in doubt, check the specific project requirements and any grid operator/municipal regulations rather than assuming one universal figure applies to every situation.
Marking: warning tape
Besides the physical depth, it is common Dutch practice to place a warning tape (usually red, printed "elektriciteit" or similar) a few decimeters above the cable. This is not a substitute for the required burial depth, but an additional warning for anyone digging later in the same trench — a KLIC notification (Kabels en Leidingen Informatie Centrum) also remains mandatory before ground works, regardless of the presence of warning tape.
Practical relevance
When expanding a business site or cultivation operation — for example a new supply cable to an additional greenhouse, shed, or charging-point cluster — the cable is often laid directly in the ground instead of in a sheathed pipe, to save costs. In that case the 0.5 m burial depth is not optional advice but the minimum requirement to be allowed to do without additional mechanical protection.
Common mistakes
- Laying a cable shallower than 0.5 m "because no one is going to dig there anyway" — without mechanical protection (conduit/plate) this does not comply with §522.8.10.1.
- Confusing warning tape with the required burial depth — the tape is an additional warning, not a substitute for the physical protection measure.
- Not submitting a KLIC notification before excavation work on a site with existing underground infrastructure, regardless of whether the new cable itself meets the depth requirement.
