Time-delayed RCD (S-type / selective)
Tijdvertraagde aardlekschakelaar (S-type)
An RCD variant with a built-in, calibrated time delay (minimum 130 ms, maximum 500 ms at rated residual current) so it only trips if a downstream (faster-acting) RCD has not already cleared the fault. Used upstream in an installation to achieve selectivity between RCDs.
Practical example
Op de hoofdverdeler staat een 300 mA S-type aardlekschakelaar; bij een lekstroom op een eindgroep lost de 30 mA instantane RCD in de groepenkast de storing op vóórdat de S-type bovenstrooms uitschakelt.
Common mistake
Twee gewone (instantane) RCD's in serie plaatsen 'voor extra veiligheid' — zonder S-type bovenstrooms schakelen beide gelijktijdig uit bij een fout, wat de gewenste selectiviteit tenietdoet.
