Charging Mode 1-4 (IEC 61851)
The IEC 61851-1 classification of how an electric vehicle is connected to the grid, increasing in safety level and power: Mode 1 (directly into a standard socket-outlet without communication, discouraged in the Netherlands), Mode 2 (socket-outlet with an in-cable control and protection device, ICCB), Mode 3 (a fixed charge point with permanent communication between the point and the vehicle via the control pilot signal, the standard solution for charging points) and Mode 4 (DC fast charging, where the rectifier sits in the charge point rather than the vehicle). NEN 1010 refers to this classification for the installation requirements of charge points, particularly for the required RCD protection and verification of a valid control pilot signal before power is released.
