Backed-Up Protection (Cascading) for Inadequate Breaking Capacity

Achterwaartse bescherming (cascadebeveiliging) bij ontoereikend breekvermogen

An exception provision in IEC 60364-4-43 §434 (adopted into NEN 1010) that permits a circuit breaker with a breaking capacity lower than the actual prospective short-circuit current at that point to still be used, provided an upstream device (typically a fuse or circuit breaker with adequate breaking capacity) is installed immediately ahead of it and the let-through energy of that upstream device is demonstrably (via manufacturer data or type test) no higher than what the downstream circuit breaker and cabling can withstand thermally and dynamically. This is called 'backed-up protection' or 'cascading' and is not a substitute for a correctly rated device of its own, but an explicitly documented exception.

Practical example
