Flexible cables — H05VV-F versus H07RN-F, and the correct application area

The cable type designation guide covers the type designation of fixed installation cable (VOB, YMvK, XVB). This article covers the designation of flexible cable — cords and connection cables for portable equipment, tools and extension leads — using the two most common types: H05VV-F and H07RN-F.

Decoding the type designation

The H-designation under NEN-EN 50525 follows a fixed structure: harmonised type (H), rated voltage (05 = 300/500 V, 07 = 450/750 V), insulation and sheath material (VV = PVC insulation/PVC sheath, RN = rubber insulation (EPR)/polychloroprene sheath), and F for a fine-stranded, flexible conductor.

H05VV-F — PVC, light to medium duty, indoor

H05VV-F has a rated voltage of 300/500 V and both PVC insulation and a PVC sheath. This type is suitable for dry, low mechanical stress indoor applications: connection cords for office equipment, luminaires and small household appliances. However, PVC has limited UV resistance and becomes more brittle in freezing conditions, so H05VV-F is not suitable for prolonged outdoor use or applications with significant mechanical stress (dragging, flexing, being run over).

H07RN-F — rubber, heavy duty, outdoor and construction sites

H07RN-F has a higher rated voltage of 450/750 V, with rubber (EPR) insulation and a polychloroprene sheath. The rubber sheath is significantly more resistant to oil, chemicals, UV radiation and moisture than PVC, and remains flexible even at low temperatures. This makes H07RN-F the appropriate type for outdoor applications, construction sites, workshops with mechanical loading of the cable, and mobile supply cables — precisely the environments in which H05VV-F would quickly degrade or become damaged.

Confusion in practice

Both types are often simply called a "cord", which means the choice is sometimes made purely on price: H05VV-F is cheaper, but for an outdoor application or site deployment that is a false economy that can be flagged as a defect at the next PAT/PGM inspection or visual inspection: a cracked, hardened or oil-affected PVC sheath on a cord used outdoors or on a construction site is a sign that the wrong cable type has been deployed.

Practical relevance

When connecting tools, extension leads (see the extension leads and reel guide) or mobile equipment, the environment in which the cable is used determines the correct type: dry and indoors with limited mechanical stress calls for H05VV-F (or equivalent), while outdoors, on construction sites, or under significant mechanical stress, H07RN-F (or equivalent, for example H05RN-F for lighter-duty use) is the correct choice.

Common mistakes

  1. Using H05VV-F for an outdoor application or site deployment because it is cheaper — the PVC sheath ages quickly under UV and frost, leading to cracking and eventually exposed conductors.
  2. Not checking the type designation printed on the cord itself — the marking on the sheath gives the exact type designation (for example, "H07RN-F 3G1.5") and is the only reliable way to establish the type, not the colour or thickness of the cord.
  3. Assuming a higher voltage designation (07 versus 05) automatically means greater mechanical durability — the voltage code says something about the electrical insulation strength, not directly about mechanical or environmental durability; that follows from the insulation/sheath code (VV versus RN).
  4. Ignoring a damaged or hardened sheath during a PAT/PGM inspection because the cable still passes electrically — a degraded sheath is a failure reason in its own right, regardless of the electrical test results.
