Clamp meter (current clamp)
A measuring instrument that measures the AC current (or, with TRMS/Hall-effect models, DC as well) through a conductor without breaking the circuit, using the magnetic field around the conductor. For a correct reading only one conductor (e.g. a single phase, not the whole cable with all cores) is clamped; the instrument must have at least the same measurement category (CAT) as the circuit being measured.
Om de belasting per fase in een groepenkast te controleren wordt een stroomtang om elke fasedraad afzonderlijk geklemd, in plaats van om de hele voedingskabel.
De hele kabel (alle aders inclusief nul) in de tang klemmen in plaats van één geleider — de magnetische velden van heen- en retourstroom heffen elkaar dan grotendeels op en de meting geeft (bijna) nul aan, ook al loopt er wel degelijk stroom.
