ATEX Explosion Group (IIA/IIB/IIC)
The classification of explosion-protected equipment for gas atmospheres (group II) by the explosion severity of the gas or vapour it is certified for, ranging from IIA (e.g. propane, least critical) through IIB (e.g. ethylene) to IIC (e.g. hydrogen, acetylene — most critical, smallest required spark gap). Equipment certified for IIC may also be used in IIB and IIA environments, but not the reverse: IIA-rated equipment is not suitable for an IIC zone.
Tijdens de periodieke inspectie van een waterstofopslagruimte controleert de inspecteur of alle geïnstalleerde schakelmaterieel expliciet is gecertificeerd voor explosiegroep IIC, aangezien IIB-materieel hier ontoereikend is.
Aannemen dat materieel met een geldig Ex-certificaat overal binnen zone-ingedeelde ruimten mag worden toegepast zonder de explosiegroep te controleren — IIA- of IIB-gecertificeerd materieel in een IIC-omgeving (bv. bij waterstof) plaatsen is een ernstige, potentieel fatale beoordelingsfout.
