Arc-flash boundary and incident energy
The calculated distance (arc-flash boundary) from a potential arc source within which the incident energy (expressed in cal/cm², the thermal energy reaching the skin) is high enough to cause second-degree burns; outside this boundary, additional arc-flash PPE is not strictly required. The calculation (e.g. using the IEEE 1584 method) accounts for fault current, protective device clearing time, voltage and switchgear configuration, and determines which PPE arc-rating class (in cal/cm²) is required for work within the boundary. In practice it is documented on an arc-flash warning label on the panel.
