Tone generator and probe — identifying an unknown conductor without cutting it
The circuit-identification-in-the-distribution-board guide covers why an up-to-date circuit list and labels are essential. But what happens when those labels are missing or no longer correct, and you still need to establish with certainty which physical conductor belongs to which circuit or which far end? This article covers the tool and technique for exactly that: the tone generator and probe (tone-and- probe).
What the tool does
A tone-and-probe kit consists of two parts:
- The tone generator — connected to one end of the conductor to be identified (for example inside an empty conduit, a bundle of unknown conductors in a distribution box, or an unlabelled cable) and modulates a recognisable, audible signal onto it.
- The probe — an inductive receiver that detects that signal without needing galvanic contact: the user moves the probe along a bundle or holds it against each candidate conductor, and hears a clear tone the moment the correct conductor is touched or passed, while all other conductors remain silent.
This makes it possible, at the other end of a long or hidden cable route, to identify the one specific conductor among dozens of others — without having to open up or cut any part of the wiring just to try it out.
When this is the right method
- Identifying a de-energised, disconnected conductor in a bundle, conduit, or cable tray whose destination is unknown or whose label has been lost.
- Tracing a buried or in-wall cable whose exact route is not known with certainty, before, for example, drilling or digging.
- Matching the correct conductor to the correct terminal in a distribution box after a renovation where the original wiring is no longer unambiguously labelled.
When this is not the right method
- Never on a conductor that could still be live without first making the installation dead and verifying it (see the two-pole voltage tester self-test guide) — a tone generator is an identification aid, not a safety instrument, and does not replace a voltage test.
- Not as a substitute for a continuity measurement — a detected tone confirms which conductor it is, but says nothing about the resistance or quality of that conductor (see the R1+R2 continuity measurement guide for assessing the quality of a protective conductor).
- Not as a substitute for a TDR measurement when a cable fault is suspected — a tone generator identifies which conductor it is, but not where in that conductor a fault is located (see the cable-fault-location TDR guide for distance-to-fault measurement).
Practical relevance
During renovations, when taking over an undocumented (or incompletely documented) installation, or when putting old, unused wiring back into service, the tone-and-probe kit is the appropriate tool to establish with certainty which conductor goes where — without cutting or guessing — before that conductor is connected, joined, or cut.
Common mistakes
- Using a tone generator on a conductor that could still be live, without first establishing that it is dead using a suitable voltage tester.
- Mistaking a detected tone for a guarantee of a good connection — the tone identifies the conductor but says nothing about its continuity or transition resistance.
- Not adjusting the probe's sensitivity on a dense bundle of conductors — too high a sensitivity can pick up a weak tone from an adjacent, unintended conductor (inductive crosstalk) and produce an incorrect identification.
- Assuming a label is correct and skipping the tone generator on an older, repeatedly modified installation — precisely there the risk of an outdated or wrong label is highest.
