Upgrading a connection — the application procedure with the grid operator

A growing business or cultivation operation often eventually runs up against the limit of its existing electricity connection — for example because of a new heat pump, additional charging points, or supplementary lighting. Upgrading the connection (a higher connection capacity with the same grid operator) follows a fixed procedure, separate from the actual installation-technical choices.

The procedure in outline

  1. Determine capacity need. Before an application makes sense, the required connection capacity must be established — often with the help of an installer, based on the combined (and any expected simultaneous) load of the installation.
  2. Submit the application. Commercial connections are applied for via mijnaansluiting.nl, a joint platform of the Dutch grid operators — not via the energy supplier, which only arranges the supply of energy, not the physical connection.
  3. Assessment by the grid operator. The grid operator assesses the application and generally makes contact within a few working days to discuss it.
  4. Quotation. If the application is feasible, the applicant receives a quotation with costs and a schedule for execution.
  5. Execution. After approval of the quotation, the actual works (for example replacement of the connection cable or transformer) are planned.

Grid congestion can significantly extend the lead time

The application itself follows a fixed process, but the execution depends on available transport capacity on the electricity grid. In areas with grid congestion (see the grid congestion guide), the waiting time for an actual upgrade can run to several years — in some published cases even to around 10 years. Submitting an application early (well ahead of the actual need) is therefore often wiser in congestion areas than waiting until the capacity is actually needed.

Note: the exact lead time and whether a waiting list applies differ strongly by grid operator, region, and the timing of the application — this article describes the procedure, not a guaranteed timeframe.

Practical relevance

For a cultivation business considering an investment in electrification (heat pump, charging infrastructure, additional lighting), it is advisable to make the capacity application the first step, well before purchasing equipment — an approved and executed upgrade is often the longest step in the entire electrification process, longer than the installation of the equipment itself.

Common mistakes

  1. Purchasing equipment first, then checking the connection — if the existing connection turns out to be insufficient, the waiting time for an upgrade can delay commissioning by months to years.
  2. Submitting the application to the energy supplier instead of the grid operator via mijnaansluiting.nl — the supplier arranges the supply, not the physical connection capacity.
  3. Not accounting for grid congestion in the local region when planning an expansion project — the lead time can vary strongly by region.
