§559 — Lighting Installations
§559 (IEC 60364-5-559 — "Luminaires and lighting installations") governs the fixed installation of luminaires: connection, mounting, and the assessment of fire risk around the luminaire.
Distance to combustible material — including via the light beam
A central principle from clause 559.4.1: when assessing the minimum distance to combustible material, it is not only direct contact with the luminaire that counts, but also material that lies in the path of the light beam — for example a curtain, a wooden shelving unit, or another combustible surface illuminated by a spotlight beam, even if the luminaire does not physically touch that material. The heat concentration of a directed light beam can still pose an ignition risk at a distance.
Note: the standard ties the required distance to the markings on the luminaire itself (the symbols per IEC 60598, for example an indication of minimum distance to the illuminated surface or "do not cover"), not to one fixed universal distance value in metres. A single number that would apply to all luminaires cannot be derived from the standard — the actual minimum distance differs per luminaire type and must be read from the manufacturer's marking or documentation.
Luminaire markings as the starting point
Rather than working from one rule-of-thumb distance, the practical approach is:
- Check the marking on the luminaire — IEC 60598 symbols indicate whether restrictions apply for mounting near combustible material, thermal insulation, or covering.
- Consult the manufacturer's documentation for the exact minimum distance that applies to that specific luminaire — this varies with wattage, light source, and construction.
- Take the light-beam direction into account, not just the physical mounting position — a spotlight aimed at a combustible surface 2 metres away can pose a greater risk than a non-directional luminaire that does physically touch a combustible surface.
Why this matters
Luminaires are a non-trivial source of fire incidents in installations — halogen and older spotlight fixtures in particular can reach considerable surface temperatures. §559 recognises that the risk is not limited to physical contact, and therefore requires an assessment that goes beyond "does the luminaire touch anything combustible".
Common mistakes
- Assessing only physical contact and ignoring the light beam itself when determining a safe mounting location.
- Applying one fixed distance value (for example "0.5 m") to all luminaires — the standard ties this to the luminaire marking, not to a universal number.
- Not consulting the luminaire marking/documentation before mounting — without this information, a substantiated distance assessment is not possible.
- Ignoring thermal-insulation markings for recessed luminaires in an insulated ceiling — a luminaire not marked as suitable for covering with insulation material can overheat if covered.
