Workplace Lighting — Illuminance Requirements (EN 12464-1)

Werkplekverlichting — verlichtingssterkte (NEN-EN 12464-1)

European standard that specifies the minimum required illuminance (in lux, measured on the task reference plane) for various types of work and spaces, supplemented by requirements for glare limitation (UGR value), colour rendering (Ra/CRI) and lighting uniformity. An office workstation typically requires 500 lux, a warehouse aisle around 150 lux, and fine inspection or assembly work may require 750-1000 lux or more. This standard is relevant to the electrical designer because the selection and positioning of luminaires, the number of circuits and the power to be installed follow directly from the required lux levels, and because NEN 1010, in conjunction with the Working Conditions Act, requires lighting installations at workplaces to meet these performance requirements.

Practical example
