Proximity Effect (Adjacent Conductors)
An additional current-displacement effect alongside the skin effect, in which the magnetic field of a nearby current-carrying conductor (for example another phase in the same cable bundle or busbar set) further unevens the current distribution within a conductor, typically concentrated on the side closest to the other conductor. The effect strengthens as conductors are placed closer together and weakens with increasing separation. Like the skin effect, the proximity effect is accounted for via a correction factor in the Rac/Rdc ratio for current-carrying capacity calculations of cable bundles and busbar systems per IEC 60287, and is particularly relevant for closely packed parallel conductors at high currents.
