Open-PEN Detection at EV Charge Points
A protective measure mandatory for EV charge points supplied outdoors from a TN-C-S network (where the PEN conductor is combined upstream in the distribution network), because a break in the PEN conductor upstream of the splitting point can cause the enclosure of the charging station and the chassis of the connected vehicle, via the PE connection, to rise to a dangerously high voltage — a risk that is much smaller for a fixed indoor installation but considerable for an outdoor, freely accessible charging point. NEN 1010-7-722 (based on HD 60364-7-722) therefore requires that such a charge point is either supplied via its own earth electrode in a TT configuration combined with an RCD, or is fitted with a detection device that recognises a PEN interruption and automatically and rapidly removes the supply to the charge point.
