Obsolescence Management of Electrical Spare Parts
The process by which a managing organisation systematically identifies that critical components in an electrical installation (such as specific circuit breakers, protection relays or variable-frequency drives) are being phased out ('end of life') by the manufacturer, and anticipates this in good time by sourcing alternative suppliers, strategically stocking critical spare parts, or drawing up a replacement plan before an unexpected failure causes prolonged, unplanned downtime. Obsolescence management is particularly relevant for older installations, where the installation-responsible person keeps an up-to-date overview, via the maintenance register and periodic NEN 3140 inspections, of components for which a direct factory-new replacement is no longer available. Without this management there is a risk that a failed, no-longer-available protective device gets temporarily replaced by a non-equivalent part, which can unnoticeably degrade the installation's selectivity or protection level.

Pas actie ondernemen op het moment dat een verouderd component daadwerkelijk defect raakt, in plaats van via periodieke inspecties en fabrikantcommunicatie vooraf te signaleren dat onderdelen worden uitgefaseerd.
