Insulation Coordination (BIL, Rated Impulse Withstand Voltage)

Isolatiecoördinatie (BIL, nominale stootspanning)

The systematic matching of the dielectric strength of all insulation in an installation (cables, transformers, switchgear) to the expected overvoltages (switching and atmospheric/lightning overvoltages), expressed as the rated impulse withstand voltage or Basic Insulation Level (BIL) per IEC 60071-1. The BIL indicates the voltage the insulation must withstand under a standardised impulse wave (1.2/50 µs for atmospheric impulses) without flashover. Unlike the overvoltage categories CAT I-IV from IEC 60664-1 (intended for low-voltage equipment and installations up to 1000 V), insulation coordination using BIL values is mainly applied to medium- and high-voltage equipment, where the chosen BIL partly determines which surge protective devices (SPDs, lightning arresters) are needed and how far they may be located from the equipment to be protected (protective distance).

Practical example
