Generator Synchronisation (Grid-Parallel Connection)
The process by which a generator, before the tie breaker to an already energised network is closed, is matched as precisely as possible to that network in terms of voltage, frequency, phase sequence, and phase angle, in order to prevent damaging current surges or mechanical shocks upon closing. A synchronisation relay or unit continuously monitors these quantities and only permits closing once all values fall within the permitted tolerances; if exceeded, the relay blocks closure. Faulty synchronisation — for example closing with an excessive phase-angle deviation — can result in extremely high inrush currents capable of seriously damaging both the generator and the rest of the installation.
