Ex protection concept (type of explosion protection)
The specific construction principle by which electrical equipment is protected from causing ignition in a hazardous area, indicated by a letter code after 'Ex' (e.g. Ex d = flameproof enclosure, Ex e = increased safety, Ex i = intrinsic safety, Ex p = pressurisation). The chosen protection concept must match the zone classification (0/1/2 or 20/21/22) and the equipment's temperature class, and is listed together with the gas group on the Ex rating plate.
Voor een schakelkast in zone 1 van een spuiterij wordt gekozen voor Ex e-armaturen met kabelinvoeren die voldoen aan dezelfde beschermingswijze, zodat het geheel als Ex-systeem gecertificeerd blijft.
Een Ex d-behuizing openen en later dichtschroeven zonder de originele, nauwkeurig gefreesde vlamdovende voegen intact te houden, of een niet-gecertificeerd kabelwartel monteren — hierdoor vervalt de Ex-certificering van de gehele behuizing, ook al lijkt hij uiterlijk onbeschadigd.
