Emissivity (Thermography)
A number between 0 and 1 indicating how well a material's surface emits infrared radiation compared with an ideal black-body radiator (emissivity 1.0). During thermographic inspections of switchgear (NEN 3140 §5), the emissivity setting on the camera must match the inspected material (e.g. oxidised copper ≈0.7, bare aluminium ≈0.1-0.2); an incorrect setting produces an incorrect, misleading temperature reading.
Bij het thermografisch inspecteren van blanke aluminium rails wordt eerst een stukje matzwarte tape opgeplakt en die plek als referentiepunt gebruikt, omdat blank aluminium een te lage en onbetrouwbare emissiecoëfficiënt heeft voor een directe meting.
De camera op de standaard emissiecoëfficiënt (vaak 0,95) laten staan bij het inspecteren van glimmend, ongeoxideerd metaal — de weergegeven temperatuur is dan veel te laag en een beginnende hotspot wordt gemist.
