§753 — Electric floor and ceiling heating
§753 governs embedded electric heating systems — not only indoor floor and ceiling heating, but since the 2014 edition also outdoor applications such as ice- and snow-melting installations and frost protection. The chapter covers, among other things, driveways, gutters, pipes, stairs, roadways and unpaved sports pitches (such as football fields) — in each case the subject is a heating element that is embedded/cast in, not a freestanding electric heater.
Scope
- Indoor: floor, ceiling and wall heating.
- Outdoor: ice- and snow-melting installations and frost prevention in, for example, driveways, gutters, pipes, stairs and roadways.
- Excluded: industrial/commercial heating systems that fall under separate standards (for example IEC 60519 or 62395).
This broad scope — including outdoor applications — is an expansion compared with the original 2005 standard ("Floor and ceiling heating systems"), which covered indoor applications only.
RCD requirement
All circuits supplying a heating element must be protected by an RCD with I∆n ≤ 30 mA — without exception, regardless of the type of heating element. Delayed (type S) RCDs are not permitted here: the protection must trip immediately, not with an intentional delay as is customary for selectivity applications elsewhere.
The earthed grid
An embedded heating element that does not come with a factory-fitted earthed screening sheath must be fitted on site with a metal grid connected to the protective conductor (PE):
- mesh size ≤ 30 mm for floor/ceiling applications;
- mesh size ≤ 3 mm for wall applications.
The purpose of this grid is explicit: if the heating element is later damaged — for example by a drill or screw during renovation work — the earthed grid ensures rapid disconnection via a short circuit to earth, instead of leaving an unnoticed, still-live conductor under the floor.
In addition, the standard requires heating-free zones: strips where drilling or screwing can later take place without risk of damaging the heating element — for example along walls, intended for the mounting of skirting boards or wall fixings.
Common mistakes
- Leaving outdoor applications (ice/snow-melting installations, frost protection) outside §753 — since the 2014 edition these fall explicitly under this chapter, not just indoor heating.
- Using a delayed (type S) RCD on a heating circuit — §753 does not permit this; the protection must trip immediately.
- Not fitting an earthed grid for a heating element without its own earthed sheath — without a grid, the rapid disconnection-on-damage intended by the standard is missing.
- Not reserving heating-free zones — without these zones there is no safe place to drill or screw later without hitting the heating element.
