Cable identification & marking — ferrules, nameplates and cable numbering

This article covers a third, often overlooked identification level in between: the cable itself, as a physical run between two points, and how that cable is made recognisable at both ends — and possibly along its route.

Why cable identification is a separate concern

In a simple dwelling installation with a handful of circuits, tracing a cable from distribution board to outlet is rarely a problem. In an industrial building, greenhouse operation, or industrial installation with dozens to hundreds of parallel cables in cable trays and ladders, this becomes fundamentally different: without explicit marking, it is often no longer possible to determine by eye which cable belongs to which connection point during a fault, an extension, or a periodic inspection — resulting in time-consuming and error-prone "point and switch" work to identify the correct cable.

Ferrules: identification directly on the conductor or cable

A ferrule (or cable marker) is a small, typically cylindrical or flat label applied directly around a conductor or cable, carrying a cable number, circuit number or function designation that corresponds to the diagram or table kept with the installation. Common types include:

  • Slide-on plastic rings with pre-printed digits/letters, slid over the conductor before termination.
  • Self-laminating labels, where a transparent section of the label folds over the printed part for protection against wear and moisture.
  • Printable heat-shrink sleeves, which besides identification also offer some mechanical and moisture protection of the cable end.

Nameplates: identification for larger cables and longer runs

For heavier supply cables, MV cables, or long cable runs in a tray or duct, a more durable nameplate is often used — an engraved or printed plastic or metal plate, attached to the cable with a cable tie or wire, that withstands prolonged exposure to UV, moisture or mechanical stress. On long runs such a nameplate is typically applied not only at both ends but also at regular intervals along the route (for example at every wall or floor penetration), so the cable remains unambiguously identifiable even halfway along its route.

Consistent numbering: linking to the diagram

The practical value of cable identification stands or falls with one consistent numbering system used both in the marking on the cable itself and in the accompanying diagram or circuit table kept with the installation (see the guide on §514 for the broader documentation requirement). A cable labelled "C14" at one end and referenced as "circuit 14" on the diagram, without an explicit link between the two notations, still creates confusion for the next technician or inspector — the benefit of physical identification is lost if the notation on the cable and in the diagram do not correspond one-to-one.

Note: IEC 60445 primarily governs the identification of terminals, conductor terminations and conductors via colour and/or alphanumeric designation, not specifically a nameplate or ferrule system for complete cable runs — for the latter there is no universally prescribed standard, and a consistent, internally documented numbering system is the practical starting point.

Practical relevance

For new construction or a major extension, it is more efficient to define cable identification at the planning stage (fixing the numbering system before the first cable is pulled) than to try to reconstruct which cable goes where after commissioning. In an existing installation without consistent identification, it is often worth adding the missing marking during a periodic NEN 3140 inspection or before an extension — the one-time time investment pays off with every subsequent fault, extension, or inspection.

Common mistakes

  1. Not marking cables at all, on the assumption that the installation is "manageable enough anyway" — this rarely holds up after a few years of extensions and changes made by different technicians.
  2. Marking only one end of a cable — without marking at both ends, a run that is remote or not visually traceable still cannot be unambiguously identified.
  3. Using a numbering system on the cable that does not correspond one-to-one with the notation in the diagram or circuit table — this relocates the identification problem rather than solving it.
  4. Using handwritten, non-durable marking in an environment with UV, moisture or mechanical stress — a label that has become illegible after a few years offers no structural solution.
