IK classification — mechanical protection of enclosures (IEC 62262)

Besides protection against dust and water (see the IP classification guide, IEC 60529), an enclosure for electrical equipment — a distribution board, a socket outlet in a workshop, an outdoor luminaire — must also withstand external mechanical impacts: a blow from a tool, a collision with a transport vehicle, vandalism. This property is expressed by the IK code, defined in IEC 62262.

What the IK code expresses

The IK code links a class to an impact energy in joules, tested with a standardised hammer (the test setup is specified in IEC 60068). The higher the IK number, the greater the impact energy the enclosure must be able to withstand without loss of function. The scale runs from IK00 (no protection) to IK10; since an addition in 2021, IK11 also exists, with an impact energy of 50 joules.

Note: the exact joule value per IK class (IK01 to IK10) follows from the official table in IEC 62262 itself — this article gives the principle and the most common industrial target values, not a complete class-by-class table.

IP versus IK: two separate classifications

This is a common source of confusion: IP and IK are independent classifications that each cover a different risk. An enclosure with a high IP value (for example IP66, fully dust- and watertight) says nothing about its mechanical impact resistance — a plastic enclosure can be excellently dust-tight and still crack at the first blow from a tool. A complete enclosure specification needs both values, for example "IP65 / IK08".

Practical target values

  • IK07–IK08 — commonly used for regular industrial distribution boards and socket outlets in workshops.
  • IK10 (twenty joules) — a commonly used higher industrial requirement, among other things for enclosures exposed to traffic, vandalism risk, or heavy tool use in the immediate vicinity (for example distribution boards in a transport aisle of a processing hall or growing operation).

Practical relevance

In an industrial hall or growing operation where forklifts, transport carts or heavy tools are used, the risk of a mechanical impact against a low-mounted distribution board is real — an enclosure selected on IP alone can still fail mechanically. When selecting an enclosure for such a location, the IK classification should therefore be explicitly weighed alongside the IP classification for the ambient conditions (dust, moisture, wash-/cleaning water).

Common mistakes

  1. Selecting on IP value alone and ignoring the mechanical environmental risks (transport, vandalism, tool use).
  2. Assuming a higher IP value automatically implies a higher impact resistance — IP and IK are completely separate tests with their own criteria.
  3. Stating an IK value without the corresponding IP value when specifying an enclosure for a risk-prone location — a complete specification needs both.
