Power Circuit Breaker — Mechanical Endurance and Switching-Cycle Maintenance Interval
A maintenance approach in which the inspection and maintenance interval of a power circuit breaker is not determined solely by a fixed calendar period, but (also) by the number of switching cycles actually performed, recorded by a mechanical or electronic operation counter on the breaker. IEC 62271-100 specifies the mechanical endurance (M1/M2 class) and electrical endurance (E1/E2 class) of a power circuit breaker in number of switching cycles before maintenance (cleaning, lubrication, contact inspection) or replacement respectively becomes necessary; a breaker that switches frequently (for example in a network with frequent load changes) can therefore reach its maintenance threshold well before the calendar interval of a comparable, infrequently switched breaker. In an NEN 3140 inspection plan for an installation with frequently switched power circuit breakers, the operation counter is therefore also read alongside the calendar interval, to determine whether maintenance is needed earlier than the standard interval prescribes.
