Safety Category & Performance Level (ISO 13849)
A classification (category B, 1, 2, 3 or 4, linked to a Performance Level a-e) from NEN-EN-ISO 13849-1 describing the reliability of a safety-related control system, such as an emergency-stop circuit or a safety relay on a machine. Electricians working on machine controls (including in the context of NEN 3140 inspections of work equipment) must know that a higher category requires the circuit to detect faults and/or be redundant, not merely that it switches off 'in principle'.
Bij het vervangen van een defect veiligheidsrelais op een productiemachine kiest de elektricien een relais met hetzelfde Performance Level (bijvoorbeeld PLd, categorie 3) als in het oorspronkelijke ontwerp, om de beoogde veiligheidsintegriteit van het noodstopcircuit niet te verlagen.
Een enkelvoudig, niet-redundant relais monteren als vervanging voor een origineel categorie 3-veiligheidscircuit omdat 'het toch hetzelfde doet' — daarmee verdwijnt de foutdetectie/redundantie en voldoet de machine niet meer aan het oorspronkelijke veiligheidsniveau.
