Cold-Shrink versus Heat-Shrink — Cable Joint and Termination System

Koudkrimp versus warmtekrimp — kabelmof- en eindsluitingssysteem

Two families of cable joint and termination systems used to insulate and seal cable connections (NEN-EN-IEC 60502 / IEC 60840), which differ in how the insulating covering is applied over the cable. In a heat-shrink system, a pre-stretched plastic sleeve is heated with a gas torch or hot-air gun, causing it to shrink onto the cable and form a tight, thermally activated seal — this requires an open flame or high temperature and therefore adequate ventilation and fire-safety measures. In a cold-shrink system, the sleeve is pre-assembled in a stretched state over a removable plastic or spiral core; once this core is withdrawn, the sleeve shrinks back into place without any heat source, which makes the system suitable for environments where open flame is not permitted (such as underground manholes or ATEX zones) and shortens installation time.

Practical example
