Occupational Exposure to Electromagnetic Fields (NEN-EN 50499)
A practical standard offering a simplified method to demonstrate that workers near low-voltage installations carrying high currents (for example near main distribution boards, large motors, welding electrodes or induction furnaces) stay within the occupational health exposure limits for electromagnetic fields, without needing an individual measurement for every situation. The standard works with generic, low-risk reference levels for current and distance: if a work situation stays below these, compliance is demonstrated without further action, and only above an action level is a specific risk assessment or measurement required. NEN-EN 50499 focuses mainly on low-frequency magnetic fields, where nerve/heart stimulation from induced currents and interference with active medical implants (such as pacemakers) are the main health concerns.
Bij het plannen van onderhoudswerk vlak naast een lasrobotcel met hoge stroomsterkte raadpleegt de veiligheidskundige NEN-EN 50499 om te bepalen of de standaard werkafstand voldoende is of dat een aanvullende risicobeoordeling nodig is voor medewerkers met een pacemaker.
Aannemen dat elektromagnetische veldblootstelling alleen relevant is bij hoogspanningsinstallaties, terwijl ook laagspanningsinstallaties met zeer hoge stromen (zoals laskabels of grote gelijkrichters) lokaal aanzienlijke magnetische velden kunnen opwekken.
