Earthing Switch — Maintenance Earthing (HV/MV)
A mechanical switching device (IEC 62271-102) that deliberately connects a section of a high- or medium-voltage installation to earth after it has been de-energised and isolated, so that maintenance personnel can work safely and any residual or induced voltage is drained immediately. A distinction is made between an ordinary earthing switch (intended for normal operating conditions, without short-circuit making capacity) and a making/fault-making earthing switch (IEC 62271-102 class E0/E1/E2), which can also be safely closed onto a circuit that is still live or short-circuited. Earthing switches are frequently mechanically or electrically interlocked with the associated disconnector and circuit breaker, so that closing is only possible once the disconnector has actually been opened.
Voordat monteurs aan een 10kV-kabelveld werken, opent de schakelaar eerst de vermogensschakelaar, opent daarna de scheider en sluit tot slot de aardingsschakelaar, waarna de mechanische vergrendeling het openen van de aardingsschakelaar blokkeert zolang de scheider niet weer gesloten is.
Een gewone aardingsschakelaar (zonder kortsluitvastheid) gebruiken op een punt waar een resterende inductieve spanning of een fout kortsluitstroom kan opleveren bij het sluiten — zonder de kortsluitvaste uitvoering (making switch) kan de schakelaar hierdoor beschadigd raken of zelfs explosief falen.
