Exam day — checklist, common mistakes and a fixed answer rhythm
You can know the theory and still fail the practical exam — not because the knowledge is missing, but because execution under time pressure and supervision works just slightly differently than studying at home. This page bundles the practical side: what to bring, which mistakes examiners see most often, and a fixed structure for answering every question so you never draw a blank.
What to bring
- A valid form of identification.
- Your own NEN 3140 VP written appointment (or proof of the previous instruction, in the case of a refresher instruction) and, if applicable, your VCA certificate.
- S3 safety shoes and flame-retardant work clothing — many training providers will not let you start at the practical setup without correct PPE.
- Your own insulating gloves, if you already own a pair — borrowed equipment doesn't always fit, and that costs time on the day itself.
- A pen (not a pencil): a switching instruction document or work permit is filled in with pen, not pencil, because a valid document must not be erasable.
- Any preparation documents or diagrams that the training provider has made available in advance, printed out or available offline on a laptop or tablet — don't blindly rely on wifi on site.
What a switching instruction document (schakelbrief) contains
A switching instruction document (or work permit) is not free-form text but a fixed document with fixed parts. The exact form differs per training provider or company, but the core always comes down to the same thing:

As with a written appointment: a switching instruction document without the signature for permission and without the completion report is an incomplete document — even if the action performed was itself correct.
Ten mistakes candidates most often stumble on
- Working from the wrong diagram or the wrong group. Always check the coding on the installation itself first before picking up a diagram — never assume the diagram you happen to have in hand first is the right one.
- Forgetting "proof of proof" (proef op de proef). A measurement was taken, but the voltage tester was not checked against a known voltage both before and after the measurement — as a result, a "no voltage" reading cannot be demonstrably proven reliable.
- Not measuring all combinations. For a three-phase group with neutral that means ten combinations (L1-L2, L1-L3, L2-L3, L1-N, L2-N, L3-N, L1-PE, L2-PE, L3-PE, N-PE); for a single-phase group that means three (L-N, L-PE, N-PE). Skipping some "because the rest will be the same anyway" is regarded as incompletely demonstrating the absence of voltage.
- Not locking out and not placing a warning sign. Switching off the circuit breaker alone is step 1, not step 2 — without a visible lock (padlock, dummy fuse-link) and a sign, someone else can unintentionally switch the installation back on.
- Not taking the fuse-links along and not putting a dummy back in place. An empty fuse-carrier without a dummy is both a safety risk (a foreign object) and a sign that the isolation has not been visibly secured.
- Silently skipping step 4 (earthing and short-circuiting). Skipping is allowed if the risk justifies it, but then you must argue that out loud — an examiner is specifically testing whether you understand when a step is and isn't needed, not whether you tick off a fixed list.
- Confusing the test voltage of the practice setup with mains voltage. Some practical setups run on a reduced, safe training voltage instead of 230/400 V — always note the value you actually measure, not the value you expect out of habit.
- Opening a load-break switch (lastscheider) under load without a screen or without first removing the load. This is a real arc-flash risk, not a theoretical rule.
- Carrying out switching actions without permission from the work-responsible person or installation-responsible person. Even during an exam you are simulating the real hierarchy: operating without consultation is a stand-alone assessment error, regardless of whether the action itself was correct.
- Not reporting that the work is complete. A task is only finished once you explicitly report that the installation is back in operational condition — a silent completion is regarded as an incomplete procedure.
A fixed rhythm for every practical question
When an examiner asks a question about a specific action, a fixed order helps you forget nothing, even under pressure:
- What is the task and what is the risk? First briefly state what needs to happen and which hazard is associated with it.
- Which group does this belong to according to the diagram? Point out the group and explain how you recognise it.
- Which permission do you need, and from whom? Explicitly name the work-responsible person or installation-responsible person.
- Work through the five steps of de-energised working, with a reason at every step. Not just what you do, but why — including an explicit reason if you deliberately skip a step.
- Which PPE and which tools do you use? Name the concrete items, not "the correct PPE" in general.
- Which measurements do you take, and against which standard do you test the outcome? State the concrete limit value, not just the measurement method.
- How do you finish up? Switch back on in the correct order, and explicitly report that the work is complete.
Even if you forget a detail, this structure shows that you reason from a systematic working method — and that is precisely what a VP written appointment means in practice: not knowing a list by heart, but arriving at a decision in a repeatable, accountable way.
The evening before
- Briefly run through the core values you need to know by heart: the five steps, the B/C/D table, the key figures (1 MΩ insulation, 0.4 s disconnection time for TN 230 V final circuits, 30 mA personal protection, 50 V safe touch voltage).
- If the training provider allows it, fill in a blank work permit or switching instruction document at home in advance for the type of task you expect — the point is not to memorise the exact answer, but getting used to the format and order of filling it in saves time and stress on the day itself.
- Repeat a few fixed reporting phrases out loud (asking permission, announcing that you are demonstrating the absence of voltage, reporting completion) — see the separate page on practical Dutch for the exam for a complete list.
