Reactive Power Capability Curve (P-Q Diagram) — Inverter
A graphical representation (prescribed in grid codes such as NEN-EN 50549-1 and IEC/IEEE 2800) of the region of combined active power (P) and reactive power (Q) within which an inverter-connected generating unit (PV, wind, battery) must be able to operate, plotted on a P-Q diagram with P on the vertical axis and Q on the horizontal axis. At full active power (P = 100%) the available reactive margin is smallest, limited by the rated current of the power electronics; at lower active power, a larger share of the inverter's capacity can be dedicated to reactive power, which typically gives the diagram a roughly circular or trapezoidal shape. Grid operators require the inverter to be able to operate anywhere within this region on request from the grid (via a fixed cosφ setting, a Q(U) characteristic, or a central setpoint), so that the generating unit can actively contribute to grid voltage regulation instead of only supplying active power at a fixed, unregulated power factor.
