Peak Shaving (Demand Limiting)
A control strategy in which brief peak loads of an installation are flattened by having a battery storage system temporarily supply (part of) the demand, or by temporarily shedding/reducing non-critical loads, so the peak off-take stays below a set threshold. Peak shaving is applied to avoid exceeding the contracted transport capacity (with associated penalties or disconnection), to avoid having to upgrade the main fuse/main switch, and to relieve grid congestion at the connection; it differs from dynamic load management in that it specifically targets flattening the peak rather than fairly distributing available capacity among consumers.
