Insulation Fault Location System (IFLS) — IEC 61557-9
A diagnostic system per IEC 61557-9 that, in addition to an insulation monitoring device (IMD, IEC 61557-8) in an IT system, actively locates the physical position of a first insulation fault in the network by injecting a low-frequency test signal through the IMD into the network and detecting this signal with current sensors on each outgoing circuit; the circuit with the strongest signal response contains the fault. Without an IFLS, an IMD only reports that a fault exists (with an alarm threshold in ohms), not where — in an extensive IT network with many outgoing circuits, locating a first fault without an IFLS can take hours, while the network must stay in service after a first fault and rapidly restoring the double-fault margin is essential.
In een ziekenhuisoperatiekamer met IT-stelsel meldt de IMD een isolatiefout tijdens een operatie; dankzij het gekoppelde IFLS ziet de technische dienst direct op welk afgaand circuit de fout zit en kan de storing na de operatie gericht worden verholpen zonder het hele net te hoeven doormeten.
Bij een uitgebreid IT-net alleen een IMD installeren zonder IFLS, in de veronderstelling dat het alarm van de IMD voldoende is — bij een eerste fout moet dan alsnog handmatig, groep voor groep, met een megohmmeter naar de foutlocatie worden gezocht, wat de tijd tot herstel van de dubbele-fout-marge onnodig verlengt.
