Dielectric Absorption Ratio (DAR Test)

Dielektrische absorptieratio (DAR-test)

An insulation-resistance-related test method in which the ratio is determined between the measured insulation resistance after 60 seconds and after 30 seconds of charging with a megohmmeter (DAR = R60s / R30s), used to detect early contamination or moisture ingress in the insulation of, for example, motor windings or transformers. The DAR test can be performed more quickly than the polarisation index test (which uses the ratio between 10 minutes and 1 minute) and is therefore particularly suited to shorter periodic checks, while the PI test is used for insulation materials with a longer absorption time constant. A low DAR value (typically below around 1.25) indicates contaminated, moist or aged insulation requiring further investigation.

Practical example
