Earthing Grid (Ground Mat) — Substation / HV Yard
A meshed network of bare copper (or galvanised-steel) conductors laid horizontally underground, usually supplemented with vertical earth rods at the crossing points, installed beneath a substation or HV yard to keep touch and step voltage at grade within permissible limits (IEC 60364-5-54 / IEEE 80) during an earth fault. Mesh spacing and burial depth are calculated from the soil resistivity, the expected fault current and the protection's clearing time: a finer mesh brings the surface potential down towards the remote reference potential faster, but raises material cost. All metal enclosures, fencing and cable trays within the yard are bonded to the grid so that no hazardous potential difference arises between accessible parts.
