Voltage Presence Indicating System (VPIS)
A system permanently built into switchgear (particularly medium-voltage switchgear) that uses capacitive sensors to continuously or on-demand indicate the presence of voltage on the connected conductors, typically via indicator lamps or a display on the switch panel. Unlike a portable two-pole voltage tester (such as per GS38/NEN-EN-IEC 61243-3), which must be self-tested before each use and requires direct galvanic or capacitive contact with the installation, a VPIS is permanently integrated and offers a quick, non-intrusive indication without needing to open the enclosure. A VPIS does not, however, replace the procedure of proving dead per the five safety rules; it is a supplementary aid that gives an initial indication before opening a compartment, after which the definitive check must be carried out with a suitable direct-measuring instrument.
