Time-Domain Reflectometry (TDR) Cable Fault Location

A measurement technique in which a reflectometer sends a short electrical pulse down a cable and measures the time until a reflection returns from an impedance discontinuity (break, short circuit, joint or cable end); using the cable's known velocity of propagation, the distance to the fault is calculated from this. Unlike a generator/receiver cable locator, which traces the route of a healthy cable, TDR specifically locates the distance to a defect within the cable itself.

Practical example

Na een storing in een ondergrondse voedingskabel wordt met een TDR-reflectometer vanaf het beginpunt gemeten dat de kabelbreuk zich op 143 meter bevindt, waardoor gericht gegraven kan worden in plaats van de hele tracélengte open te leggen.

Common mistake

Een onjuiste voortplantingssnelheid (VOP) voor het kabeltype invoeren in de reflectometer — hierdoor wijkt de berekende afstand tot de storing tientallen meters af van de werkelijke locatie.
