Thermal Runaway (Lithium Battery)
A self-reinforcing process in which a damaged, overcharged or short-circuited lithium(-ion) cell internally generates so much heat that the temperature rises uncontrollably further, resulting in gas release, fire or explosion. Relevant to NEN 3140 inspection of work equipment with built-in batteries and to home batteries/BESS, where a faulty cell or a failing battery management system can be the trigger.
